Complicated Bereavement Sample Treatment Plan

  Problems:
       
Presence of guilt about things other than actions taken or not taken by the survivor at the time of death Prolonged and marked functional impairment
Presence of thoughts of death other than the survivor feeling that he/she would be better off dead or should have died with the deceased person Hallucinatory experiences as often thinking that he/she hears the voices of  or transiently sees the image of the deceased person
Morbid preoccupation with worthlessness Avoidance of discussing of the loss
Marked psychomotor retardation    
       
  Goals:    
       
Begin a healthier grieving process around the loss Begin the process of letting go of the loss
Develop insight into his/her unhealthy response to loss Eliminate all hallucinatory experiences
Replace the loss with healthy relationships Resume previous level of functioning both socially and at work
  Objectives:    
       
Patient will increase his/her ability to verbalize and experience feelings connected with the loss Patient will verbalize and resolve feelings of anger or guilt focused on self or deceased one that hinders healing
Patient will verbalize an increase in understanding of the process of grieving Patient will acknowledge dependency on the lost loved one and begin the process of independence
Patient will identify how the pathological grieving has negatively impacted his/her life Patient will identify excessive idealization of the lost loved one
